Chalkboard Review set out in November 2020 to give a voice to everyone involved with education—not just those with hyperprogressive views. We were tired of the same old opinion columns, prattling on about unions or funding — not wrong per se, but uninteresting and unoriginal. Education needed some ideological diversity to enliven the debate.
And so we started a publication dedicated to just that. Since then, we’ve published over 300 articles, broke some of the most underreported yet critical issues happening in the United States, and changed how serious conversations in education reform take place. We published leading scholars in think tanks, professors of education, teachers, students, and parents, garnering tens of thousands of readers a month.
In February, I was appointed the Executive Director of the education nonprofit Choice Media, following a decade of crucial work by Bob Bowdon. Choice Media coalesced the best reporting and commentary on education from around the country alongside a dedicated wire on all education news. It was no longer necessary to follow dozens of local publications to find out the trends in classrooms, statehouses, and academia—Choice Media organized all of it to be perused in one place.
Today, these two education organizations join together as “Chalkboard Media” to provide a one-stop-shop for all the best commentary and reporting in education — everything from school choice to how the supply chain crisis affected school lunches, from stories of homeschooling successes to inside scoops on school board elections.
Legacy media and union-funded organizations no longer have a monopoly on what stories get told, how they get promoted, and when people are notified about issues crucial to the most influential area of American life.
Chalkboard Review will continue to provide commentary, reporting, and other heterodox content—refusing to censor stakeholders in education because of their politics, while Chalkboard Media will take education news, podcasts, and other media from around the country and localize them for our readers’ convenience.
Now Chalkboard Review and Choice Media will stand side-by-side on a new website, an ongoing project by the staff of both teams to ensure everyone has equal access to listen and speak on education issues. Daniel Buck & I humbly ask you to sign up for our newsletter so you can stay informed on the content we’ll continue to provide!
